Often called a pink cockatoo due to its soft pink body coloring, the Major Mitchell cockatoo is in fact named after Major Sir Thomas Mitchell, who was a surveyor and explorer of Southeast Australia during the 1800s. This beautiful cockatoo’s most distinctive feature is its white tipped crest, which is banded red and yellow at the base. The wings are generally white with a darker pink underside. The birds grow to 36 cm long, a medium size among cockatoos. Living in small groups or pairs, they have also been seen with flocks of galahs and little corellas.
Feeding
Major Mitchell’s Cockatoos are omnivorous, eating the seeds of grasses, shrubs and trees, as well as roots and bulbs, and insect larvae. These are taken from the ground or while perched in plants. They usually forage in small groups, often in the company of Galahs or Little Corellas, though larger flocks occasionally form, sometimes comprising hundreds of birds.
Breeding
A clutch of 3–4 eggs is laid in a large hollow in a vertical hollow. Both birds incubate the eggs and care for and feed the chicks, with young birds becoming independent from their parents when they are about 4 months old.
